Graduate screening tests are designed to cut candidate pools. Don’t count yourself out. Practice here before you apply.
Many graduate applications pass through an automated reasoning test before a person reads them. Wamberry is calibrated practice for that test, so the result reflects your ability rather than whether you had seen the format before.
01
The screening trap
Reasoning tests often decide who gets an interview. Score high enough to stay in the running.
Automated reasoning tests are an unavoidable reality across modern graduate hiring, despite their modest predictive validity. Before an interview there is frequently a timed test of numerical, verbal, logical or abstract reasoning, scored automatically.
A 2022 meta-analysis by Sackett, Zhang, Berry and Lievens in the Journal of Applied Psychology puts the validity of cognitive ability tests for job performance at about .31. That is a modest link: squared, it accounts for roughly a tenth of the variation in how well people do the job. Other methods have limits of their own, and the tests are not the strongest predictor in the study:
- .42
- Structured interviews
- .31
- Cognitive ability tests
- .19
- Conscientiousness
The other major screening tool is the personality questionnaire, and it has a fundamental weakness: it is easy to fake. A meta-analysis by Birkeland and colleagues (2006, International Journal of Selection and Assessment) found that job applicants score markedly higher than non-applicants on traits such as conscientiousness and emotional stability, shaping their answers to fit the profile they think the employer wants. A questionnaire that rewards guessing the ideal answer says more about test-taking than about the person. We believe it has no place as a gatekeeper, and Wamberry deliberately does not train for it.
Reasoning practice is different. Numerical calculation, logical deduction and data interpretation are genuine, transferable skills, and they are worth building whether or not a test is waiting at the end.
Employers are not going to stop using automated screening tests any time soon. A cut-off decides who is seen, so candidates need to excel simply to survive the cut and earn a fighting chance at an interview. That is why Wamberry exists: to level the playing field, so that everyone has the same chance to learn the format.

The method
Adaptive difficulty, verified answer keys and solutions that transfer.
-
Adaptive difficulty
You and every question carry a live Elo rating on one scale. Each answer is a match between you, so difficulty settles where you learn fastest, around a seven-in-ten success rate. See the mathematics
-
Verified answer keys
Every item is original and its key is independently checked before it goes live. The bank currently holds — verified questions.
-
Solutions that transfer
A miss shows the principle, the working step by step, a heuristic for the next question of that shape, and what each wrong option was built to catch. Read a worked example
